The Emerging Status of Nonprofits And the Bystander Effect

On March 13, 1964, Kitty Genovese was returning home from work as a bar manager in New York. She parked her car and walked towards her apartment, just a 100 feet away. Suddenly she heard footsteps racing behind her. Before she could react, the assailant stabbed her twice. Screaming at the top of her lungs, she cried for help; repeatedly. No one came.  She died two hours later.

As investigators and reporters began piecing the story together, they were shocked by the lack of citizen intervention. At least two dozen people heard the screams over a 30-minute time span. Politicians, psychologists and clergymen were outraged, calling it another example of our apathetic social decay.

But two psychologists weren’t so sure. They wanted to know why Kitty was offered no help. Over the course of the next year, they conducted a series of experiments in crowded and private situations to understand what triggers and doesn’t trigger a response from bystanders. Here’s what they discovered:
Crowds behave like schools of fish – they group think. If there are no reactions to a stimulus, no one in the crowd will act. They found that “no one wants to stands out in a crowd.” This was proven time and time again as experiments were conducted on busy New York streets.

But as they tweaked their experiments, they finally discovered the answer and what instigates a reaction.
In today’s version of the “bystander effect,” one of our most precious socially important industries continue to pattern their future in the same methods as the past. As funds continue to dry up, many nonprofit agencies continue to seek financial help by using a single method of revenue generation: writing grants.

In comparison, a growing legion of innovative nonprofits across the globe are building “social enterprises,” and generating income through their own sales and services. One important result of this type of income is that grant-makers are more inclined to approve funds to organizations that are proving their ability to diversify their resources and gain greater self-sufficiency.

So in collaboration between Renaissance Marin and the Marin Community Foundation, we’re launching our best effort to break the bystander effect. Open to the first 20 nonprofits, this is an opportunity for agencies to learn the methods for building their own social enterprises. Think about the alternative: stay steady on your current course and watch your grant dollars diminish. The cost is also exceptionally affordable with some tuitions at $100 - less than seven percent of a popular national training program.

This is the one and only time we’ll be offering this training in 2013. The program is tailored made for nonprofits with little or no experience with business modeling. Not only will you learn all the essentials, you’ll have an opportunity to pitch your concepts to a panel of well accomplished business and social entrepreneurs. For ten groups that finish this two-month program, personal consultation will be provide to help you take your concepts to reality.

In addition, the workshops have been developed to respect your busy schedule. We’ll be meeting once every Thursday morning for three hours during the eight-week program starting January 31.

To get all the information, we urge you to attend the upcoming orientation on Thursday, Dec. 13; 10am at Renaissance Marin, 1115 3rd Street, San Rafael.

This program is specific to nonprofit agencies in Marin County and highly recommended for organizations receiving their funding through MCF.

For reservations to the orientation, please call us at 415.755.1115.

If you find yourself among of sea of bystanders unwilling to help you, what the researchers found was to target a single individual, get in front and make a plea. They found that tactic was the most effective way to gain help because a single individual when alerted stops group-think and becomes personally responsible.

RenCenter event: Increasing Revenues for Your Nonprofit

Renaissance Marin will conduct an orientation on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10 am for nonprofit agencies who need to supplement their existing revenues by creating a social enterprise.

This program comes through the sponsorship of the Marin Community Foundation which saw a need to help many of its own grantees to diversify their revenues streams.

Renaissance Marin will be launching this workshop on January 31 to the first 20 organizations that sign up and pay the low-cost tuition, based on a sliding scale.

The workshop will provide:

* Classroom instruction
* Real-world practices
* One-on-one assistance and
* An opportunity to pitch your concepts to a panel of  experts.

If you've explored taking a workshop on this very subject, you know the costs are upwards of $1500.

In this workshop, the tuition costs:

Annual Revenue                                  Tuition

to $100,000                                            $100
$101,000 to $250,000                              $200
$251,000 to $500,000                              $300
$501,000 to $1,000,000                           $400
Over $1,000,000                                      $500

The training will take place at the Renaissance Center Marin in San Rafael. It will run three hours per session, once a week on Thursdays at 10am for eight weeks. Following the class sessions, a number of hours have been reserved to provide one-on-one assistance to individual agencies to help them launch their enterprises.

So, if your agency has been searching for new ways to generate revenue, we urge you to attend this orientation, meet the staff and the main instructor. We'll give you the full picture about the program because we all know that many nonprofits continue to operate at less-than adequate financial levels.

Please RSVP to reserve your seat by calling 415.755.1115. Please note: this workshop is for Marin County Nonprofit Agencies only.

Joanna offers individuals and groups assistance with personal growth, teaches the need to come together as community, to listen to one another, and to work together to address the larger picture of integral planetary healing. She also offers consultation services for MFT Trainees and Interns, in addition to practice building consultation services for people in psychology and related professions. She is committed to continued development of these professional endeavors.

Her work speaks in this way as well…
“In the hushed hours of the night, an old, familiar whisper sighs…something isn’t working.  Can you continue to smother the voice that is calling you to all that is real, all that is unlived, unloved, and all that is missing from your waking life?  For many people each day is a struggle, a compromise and a resignation.  They are just waiting to live.  They dream of the other shore where life truly begins. Guiding people to cross over to the other side is my life calling.

I show people how to break lifelong patterns once and for all, so they can end a lifetime of silent suffering.  They are finally free to fully express the peace and aliveness that is waiting to pour out of them. It really matters to me that you can learn to be truly happy and not fake happy. Together we can walk through the matrix of the unnatural shadow self you have long carried, and release the life force to create the true desires of your soul.

When you reach that real place inside yourself, your instincts are naturally restored and your life begins to flow. You no longer experience burnout, emptiness, or unnecessary separations that cause humans pain.
When you are living from your genuine self there is a native relaxation.  Life, love, and work spring from a natural internal state of rest. So do joy, creativity and play.

I am here to walk beside you, as your authentic self emerges and you begin to live in the simplicity of your being. I offer you a heart that truly cares and a keenly intuitive perception to witness the gifts awakening inside of you.

MENTORSHIP & COACHING

Coaching

Coaching is different from psychotherapy or spiritual guidance work in that the process focuses on the development of a new vision of your overall mission in work, personal or other area of life, via the development of specific tasks and goals, and a pragmatic, simple and clear approach to accomplishing and manifesting them within a very specific period of time. Whereas therapy focuses on the underlying feelings, motivations, and underpinnings within any situation, coaching does not delve into these areas, but instead goes directly into the work, action, and movement that is required to move from point A to point B and to embody that work effectively and clearly.

I offer the coaching packages below to suit your individual needs. Choose one and begin to embody your authentic life or business spirit, occupational destiny calling and mission now. If you have tried this before and struggled, please come, and begin again today.

Supervision and Consultation for MFT Interns and Licensed Individuals Trainings Offered For MFT Interns and Agencies. In addition to supervision, consultation and practice building services, Joanna is also available to counseling centers and training facilities to provide trainings. Her training style is warm, interactive, and multi-dimensional. Also she is sensitive to the needs and vulnerabilities of new trainees and interns. Training offers:
•         Developing Presence as a New Practitioner
•         Beginning To Work With Countertransference
•         Clinical Issues at The End of Therapy

Go Native! Chef John Farais from indigenousedibles.com to appear at Guest Chef in Oakland from Oct 9 - 21, 2012.

Have you heard of Guest Chef? Guest Chef is a restaurant in Oakland that invites different chefs to cook there. Guest Chef will be featuring chef John Farais for two weeks from Oct 9 through 21 to introduce his very own native edible food menu.

John Farais is a Marin County chef, lecturer, and cooking instructor with a very unique passion. He is one of the few, if not the only, Bay Area chefs who specialize in the history, taste, and promotion of The Americas’ indigenous edible plants. John uses ingredients that are native to The Americas, both North and South America. Although his cooking incorporates American Indian techniques, it is not necessarily American Indian cuisine, nor is John a Native American. John's company is aptly called INDIGENOUS EDIBLES.

John taught himself the natural history of California Indians, ethno-botany and native anthropology before concentrating on indigenous ingredients as food and native cookbooks. It is his goal as a chef, to help diners rediscover our proud, ancient, history of native edibles. This approach has developed a cuisine that combines the historical natives with contemporary tastes, discovering a Real “California Cuisine”.

John has lectured for Slow Food, Oakland Museum, SFSU, College of Marin and California native Garden Foundation.

John has also cooked for Carlo Petrini, the creator of Slow Food International, Actor Peter Coyote, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, and many private clients in Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, and San Jose.

John is a board member of the Museum of the American Indian, Slow Food USA, and Chef’s Collaborative. A portion of his proceeds will go to starting a foundation to help Native Americans regain their heritage food ways, through native plant agriculture, and teaching future generations how to grow, cook and eat whole foods.

What's a Tandoor or Tandoori?

Tandoori Chicken is a spicy roasted chicken made in a Tandoor and seasoned with spicy yogurt and curry based sauce. Tandoori or Tandoor is an earthen oven used in India. It usually gets very hot, around 800 F, inside it. Tandoor barrel-shaped and run by using coal which burns at the bottom and heats clay interior.

The best substitute for Tandoor will be a closed charcoal grill. You can also use an oven, but it should be your last resort

Tandoori Chicken is also spelled as Tanduri chicken or Tandori Chicken.

Ingredients:

10 pieces of chicken (drumsticks and/or breast with skin removed)
     1 cup plain yoghurt

Spices:

1 tablespoon melted butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon red chilli powder (adjust according to preference)
1 tablespoon coriander powder
1 tablespoon garlic paste
1 tablespoon ginger paste
1 tablespoon cumin powder
½ tablespoon mustard
½ tablespoon garam masala powder

Optional Spices:

A few pods of cardamom, a pinch of saffron, salt to taste
Note: You can also buy ready-made Tandoori Chicken Spice mixture or paste in any South Asian store or ethnic sections of big grocery store.

Preparation:

Mix all spices with yogurt and butter to make marinating sauce.
Prick the chicken and apply the sauce. Cover chicken and marinate overnight inside a refrigerator (at least 4 hrs).
Grill the chicken in regular way. (For better result, apply melted butter to the chicken just before you grill.)
Cook chicken until brownish (or way you prefer)
Serve sliced onion (ring) and lemon wedges with the tandoori chicken. Lemon juice can be sprinkled on the cooked chicken to add zesty flavor.

Napa Dentist and Dental Implants & Dentures by Steven M. Mansfield

Since opening the practice doors in 1986, Valley Prosthodontics primary goal is to serve the patient with the highest level of professional dental care in an environment of compassion, courtesy, and confidence.

They are dedicated to keeping skills sharp and ears open. Valley Prosthodontics invites everyone to share their hopes and concerns, and to fully participate in the treatment process. The staff is hoping that your experience with them will lead to recommendation to your family and friends.

Why a Prosthodontics

Prosthodontists is a licensed dentist with two to three years of additional specialized training in dental prosthetics—the replacement and repair of missing or damaged teeth.

Prosthodontics’ routinely collaborate with general dentists and other specialists, and are specially qualified to provide advanced dental care involving crowns, bridges, implants, and removable dentures. We also perform routine screening for oral cancer and TMJ disorders, as well as more sophisticated reconstruction involving the teeth and hard and soft tissues of the mouth and face.

Services

An immediate denture is a full or partial denture which is placed immediately following the extraction of natural teeth. Extractions are performed very comfortably with local anesthesia or oral sedation. The principal benefit of an immediate denture is that it protects the patient from the inconvenience and possible embarrassment of being without teeth. The denture itself can also aid in the post-surgical healing process by protecting tissues and reducing bleeding.

Percelain Crowns, Bridges & Veneers

A crown is a dental restoration that covers all or most of the visible portion of the tooth. It is used when a tooth has become damaged by decay or trauma, or to improve appearance.

A fixed bridge replaces missing teeth, is non-removable and natural feeling. This useful procedure involves joining a prosthetic tooth to sturdy crowns on either side. These crowns are then cemented over a patient’s natural teeth, effectively “bridging” the gap in between. A bridge may also utilize dental implants for support when several teeth are missing.

Veneers are thin coverings of porcelain or composite which are placed upon the visible surface of the tooth. They are primarily applied to front teeth and are used for aesthetic purposes. They can restore, lengthen, brighten and reshape teeth, often dramatically improving a person’s smile.

Natural Looking Partial & complete Dentures

Full and partial dentures are removable prosthetic appliances used to replace missing teeth. They may allow a patient to enjoy a greater variety of foods, while promoting a more youthful and natural face structure and smile.

Extractions & immediate Dentures

An immediate denture is a full or partial denture which is placed immediately following the extraction of natural teeth. Extractions are performed very comfortably with local anesthesia or oral sedation. The principal benefit of an immediate denture is that it protects the patient from the inconvenience and possible embarrassment of being without teeth. The denture itself can also aid in the post-surgical healing process by protecting tissues and reducing bleeding.

Implant Prosthodontics

For most patients, dental implants provide the most attractive, permanent, and functional replacement for missing teeth. The implant is placed into the jaw where it serves as a sturdy and durable foundation upon which a prosthetic tooth (crown) is securely placed.

Implants can also be used to secure dentures, greatly improving their stability, comfort and function. The implant itself serves as an anchor to the jaw and aids in maintaining the natural shape of the face.

The computer and medical worlds are both working hard to develop small and smaller components. In similar fashion, a smaller version of the dental implant has been successfully utilized in selected cases.

These mini implants (1.8mm diameter) enable your dentist to broaden the spectrum of patients that can be treated. The Sendax MDI System was developed in order to provide greater denture stability for those patients who cannot withstand thee rigors of conventional implant surgery, do not have enough bone to allow for full-sized implants to be placed, or are in on-going therapy from one prosthetic system to another.

What are MDI Implants?

The MDI System consists of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth, and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture. The head of the implant is shaped like a ball, and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring. The O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force. When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micro-mobility while withstanding natural lifting forces.

TMJ Therapy

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge which connects the lower jaw to the skull. Trauma or disease to the TMJ can cause problems such as jaw pain, headaches and earaches. Special diagnostic skills are used to help determine the best treatment for TMJ dysfunction sufferers.

Valley Prosthodontics with D.M.D. Steven Mansfield has offices in the towns of Napa and Sonoma.

Rogers Remodel Promotes Green Projects!

When every last detail of bath or kitchen remodel is wrapped up, Northern California plumber and building contractor Jamie Rogers hopes his clients are happy with the way the room looks and works. Most of the time, the project also makes the home a whole lot greener.

Rogers brings a passion for both green plumbing and green building to every project. In construction for 18 years and plumbing for 15, he started Rogers Remodel, Inc. in 2003 in Novato in the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied civil engineering and worked as a journeyman carpenter in Washington State before moving to California.

Rogers Remodel primarily serves affluent Marin and Sonoma counties, San Francisco and the East Bay. The full-service plumber handles residential and light commercial work, from basic plumbing to full-on, ripped-down-to-the-studs renovations. The company does repairs, inspections, sewer and drain work, water audits, gas line and water heater installation, and bath and kitchen installation and remodeling.

Rogers is not shy about admitting he's a bit of an evangelist on the subject of conservation, saying that he's frankly touched when his efforts to educate homeowners and business clients hit home. Sometimes he's preaching to the choir. Customers do come to him with an eye to reducing immediate water and energy use and slicing utility costs for the long run.

He estimates that 75 percent of his remodels are green and 80- to 90 percent of his plumbing projects have a green component. Rogers has been able to reduce clients' water bills as much as 47 percent.

The company has benefited from the remodeling surge in recent years, Rogers said, as owners of older homes take on updating a single bath or knocking down walls to create expansive master suites or create double bathrooms. He cited projects where a total "remodel" budget has surpassed the value of the original space and his part of the job was significant. Most of his larger remodeling jobs have been in Sonoma and Marin Counties, where clients have had the funds to renovate.

Rogers is on a mission to convince more clients that a green remodel is within their budget. "If there's one thing consumers need to know, it's that green projects and products don't have to be any more expensive than traditional options. "They can get the look they want with products that do the job while saving water and energy," Rogers said.

As a plumber/building contractor, Rogers is hands-on during the design and specification stages of many projects, offering his input on sourcing green products.

He uses many of the same sources repeatedly because field experience has demonstrated what products best fit project needs, while being on constant lookout for new products and ways to improve on installation. For example, when possible, he configures piping in shorter runs to get water where it needs to go more quickly and efficiently.

One extensive remodeling project was the 4,500 square foot Courtney residence in Marin County's slightly posh Mill Valley. "The initial plan was to add a guest suite to the '70s era home, and push out to give the son a larger room and private bath," Rogers said.

The Mill Valley project's "in-law" suite included a kitchen, bath and laundry room. Rogers did the plumbing on those areas as well as remodeling three existing baths, five baths in all. The job stretched over eight months, with possibly the biggest challenge having to haul cast iron up about 90 steps, he said.

The plumbing work included interior re-piping in PEX and copper and exterior in Aquatherm, a very durable green pipe that uses heat to fuse pipes together, and installation of a whole-house circulation system with Metlund pumps. Hot water was provided via two A.O. Smith hybrids, a large one of the main house and a smaller one for the guest house. The advantage of the hybrids, Rogers explained was that they heat up water quickly like a tankless but also store water, and that an upgrade of the gas line wasn't required.

In the baths, Rogers put in Toto high efficiency 1.28 gpf toilets, lower flow Grohe valves and showerheads and low-flow Hansgrohe faucets. While they were at it, the homeowners added PV solar. Rogers' pride in the project is obvious when he talks about how cool the baths look with features selected from Restoration Hardware that give the baths a retro, yet modern feel.

For another large green project, the Kramer residence in Novato, the company remodeled a full kitchen and two baths. Rogers and his full-time crew of three not only did the plumbing but framing, electrical, cabinetry and lighting as well.

"What I liked about this kitchen is the use of recycled materials and natural light," Rogers said. The countertops are fabricated of recycled marble and granite and the backsplash of recycled glass. Natural light is brought in by a skylight and the space boasts energy-saving under-cabinet LED lighting. A non-demand circulation system feeds hot water to remodeled kitchen and two bathrooms.

An example of going green without sacrificing the "wow factor" is a bath from another Rogers Remodel project in Novato which included a full kitchen and two baths.

Green materials were used when possible. The master bath was plumbed with low-flow faucets and showerheads in the large shower and soaking tub with waterfall faucet, and the builder used recycled materials for the floor, and added a skylight and LED lighting. "In the master bath, we retained the tank heater. On a lot of projects we'll upgrade the tank or go tankless, depending on what they need what their peak flow is."

The large shower guest bath had both a rain-type showerhead and a handheld shower. The installer used a diverter so that only one low-flow showerhead or the other could be used at one time.

Green features in the kitchen included a recirculation pump, aerators on faucet, a low water use dishwasher, skylights, and LED under-cabinet lights. On projects like this, Rogers said, it's important to insulate everything well.

Rogers' efforts on the green plumbing front earned him the GreenPlumber of Year award or the Western states from GreenPlumbers USA and IAPMO. He was cited for "going above and beyond by collaborating with community partners to install water catchment systems in two local schools. Jamie has calculated that he has saved 2.4 million gallons of water this year [2011] in the Bay Area and has also promoted water conservation by serving on local job-building boards and green employment councils."

"We teamed up with local water districts for toilet change outs and did a lot of water audits the past year for clients in commercial buildings and we were able to calculate how much water was saved with the change outs and the other projects that I did," Rogers explained.

On the school projects, "we teamed up with RainwaterHog, a rainwater harvesting company out of Australia, to install rainwater capture systems in a couple of different schools," Rogers said. "We met them (RainwaterHog) at a trade show and signed on as distributor and installer of their products in the Bay Area."
Through GreenPlumbers, Rogers and the manufacturer put in seven rainwater tanks and a hand pump at McKinley Elementary School in San Francisco for the students to use to water their plants. They installed three tanks at Hall Middle School in Larkspur which were rigged to flush a toilet. "We donated most of our services for those first two projects. It's a great hands-on demonstration about conservation for the kids. We want to do more like them."

Rogers plans to keeping delivering the green message, whether with individual homeowners or business clients, working with local water districts in programs such as water audits and toilet change outs and through GreenPlumbers to help educate other plumbing and building professionals.

Even though he started on the construction side, Rogers said he loves plumbing. And, there's no greater compliment to plumber or builder than having a client say, "I love the work you did and I want you for my next project."

Lotus Chaat & Spices serves Indian Street Food in San Rafael, Marin County

Lotus Chaat and Spices is the North Bay’s only destination for the delicious snack foods of India: dishes that will not only nourish you but also tingle your tongue and provoke your palate with a kaleidoscope of flavors, textures and spices.

What is Chaat?

Most chaat are based on dough made from a variety of flours. Depending on the type, they’re deep-fried, baked or steamed. They can be stuffed or topped with a variety of fillings that range from potatoes, beans and chick peas to assorted vegetables to cheese, even other grains.

About Lotus Chaat

Lotus Chaat & Spices, the only Indian chaat restaurant in the North Bay, debuted in San Rafael in April 2011.

The vibrant-colored café, which seats 80 indoors and 20 at sidewalk café-style outdoor tables, is located at 1559 4th St. on the West end of San Rafael’s burgeoning business district.

The new eatery also contains a small Indian grocery store which is imported from India’s most renowned food producers and is a center for Indian cooking classes.

“We’re delighted to be the first chaat house in the North Bay,” said owner Surinder Pal Sroa, who also owns the famous Lotus Cuisine of India in San Rafael, Anokha Cuisine of India and Golden Egg Omelet House in downtown Novato as well as Café Lotus in Fairfax .

Sroa was born in India and grew up in the grocery and spice business. According to him chaat, or small plates of savory foods, have become one of the most popular meals in the world — not just in India, where they originated, but throughout Southeast Asia.

Why Eat Chaat?

The popularity of Chaat is spreading because these types of dishes are made with healthy ingredients: whole grains, grain and bean flours, fresh potatoes, chickpeas and vegetables such as onion and cauliflower. In addition, chaat are typically vegan as well as low in fat or even fat-free and mostly gluten-free.

Most of the ingredients are organic, even locally made. For example, the popular Three Twins organic ice cream company crafted four ice cream flavors specifically for Lotus Chaat & Spices, including Alfonso mango and green cardamom.

Popular plates at the new restaurant include Chole Bhature, wafer-thin, puffy breads deep-fried to be greaseless, airy, crisp and soft all at the same time, served with a richly-spiced, savory stew of chick peas and red onions. Bhel puris, little shells of crunchy, ultra-thin pastry filled with chick peas, tamarind sauce and yogurt, are another hit. The menu also features some of India’s most popular sodas. It truly is a street food extravaganza, but with the comfort of seating in a colorful, Indian art-filled space.

The kitchen is headed by executive chef Hari Krishana Mehta, who owned the popular India Village in San Rafael for 24 years. His chef de cuisine is Parshotam Lal, a veteran of India Palace in Mill Valley and Raja Cuisine of India in Berkeley.

The space is also available to be booked for private parties and cooking classes, such as team-building culinary adventures.

COOKING CLASS

Lotus Chaat & Spices offers monthly Indian cooking classes, usually on the last Monday of every month. Sign up to learn how to cook the finest Indian dishes.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County, CA: Serving the homeless and those in need with our soup kitchen, car donation program and much more.

WHO WE ARE

St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County’s goal is straightforward: to provide services to those in Marin County who are struggling to make ends meet and might not otherwise received help.

Competent volunteers meet with individuals and/or families in order to establish a trusting relationship and to ascertain how they can best be served. They provide assistance in the form of direct aid, intervention, advocacy or moral support. This "neighbor helping neighbor" model holds "respect" as dearest attribute: respect those they serve for their many experiences, their struggles, their talents and their humanity.

The Free Dining Room uses this same volunteer-driven model. In the dining room, neighbors provide neighbors with hot food, a place for respite and a listening heart. They serve all who enter our doors, 365 days of the year.

St Vincent de Paul Society of Marin is a part of an international catholic organization providing services and assistance to those in need. The Marin Council is independently incorporated, administered by its own volunteer board of directors and responsible for its own fundraising and programs. All donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin stay in Marin County.

One of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (http://www.svdpusa.org) is a Catholic lay organization of more than 690,000 men and women throughout the world who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually and offer person-to-person service to the needy and people living in poverty in 142 countries on five continents. With the U.S. headquarters in St. Louis, Mo., membership in the United States totals more than 172,000 in 4,600 communities. Programs include home visits, housing assistance, disaster relief, job training and placement, food pantries, dining halls, clothing, transportation and utility costs, care for the elderly and medicine. Providing more than $595 million in tangible and in-kind services, SVdP serves more than 14 million people in need each year, performs more than 648,000 visits to people in their homes, and delivers more than seven million service hours to those in need, regardless of age, religion, creed, nationality or ethnic background.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County is committed to ensuring that all individuals have equal access to our assistance, programs, facilities, and employment opportunities. We do not discriminate against any person that will seek help and offer assistance regardless of the race, color, creed, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, age, national origin, political affiliation, immigration status, mental or physical disability, income level, or medical condition.

SERVICES

Last year, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County helped more than 16,000 people in the community, offering assistance in the form of free hot meals, rental deposits, utility assistance, social service referrals, and other vital needs. These services operate without government or church funds, allowing them to serve the community without barriers or restrictions in a timely and compassionate manner. With the kind support of its donors who value the advocacy of St Vincent de Paul, they are able to offer these services free of charge.

DINING ROOM
Every day, homeless neighbors and other struggling citizens are served with our soup kitchen, housing assistance, open pantry and much more. The Free Dining Room was created in 1981 as a free kitchen to serve Marin County's hungry citizens with dignity and a welcoming demeanor. The Free Dining Room has been open every single day since then, and has served more than two million meals to our hungry neighbors. Each year St Vincent de Paul serves more than 140,000 meals, providing the only sustenance of the day for diners. Many of them are Marin's "working poor," living below the poverty line and trying to make ends meets. We also serve senior citizens and people with disabilities, who often appreciate a hot meal and some warm conversation. Finally, the Dining Room offers a welcome respite to those who do not have housing, and must sleep in their cars or in the hills of Marin County.

HOMELESS HELP DESK

Homeless Help Desk welcomes over 1,400 clients each year and offers limited financial aid, referrals, and a sympathetic ear to people without a place to live. The core of this service is to acknowledge emergency needs and stabilizing individuals and families. Last year Vinnies helped transition more than 75 people off the street and into permanent housing.

Services includes such as:
* Brief motel stays for homeless and stranded families
* Rental Deposit assistance
* Transportation
* Prescription medications
* Blankets
* Food
* Clothing, toiletries and other essentials

HOME VISITS

Every week in Marin County, volunteers from the Society visit people struggling to make ends meet in their homes to help them get through life's struggles. The primary goal of these visits is to prevent homelessness. They do this by providing rental assistance, utility bill payments, food and more. Cash is never distributed to clients; all needs are verified with appropriate third parties, and all assistance is paid directly to landlords, utility companies, etc. This program is exceptionally committed to keeping children housed, to provide the stability and security that all children need to thrive.

Home visits are the "heart" of the Society, and have been happening around the world for more than 170 years. Last year more than 200 volunteers provided 1,174 home visits to people in every city and town in Marin County.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County owns and operates eight low income apartments above our Dining Room, providing housing for very low income and chronically homeless residents. These apartments are located in downtown San Rafael close to transportation, employment and support services.

WHO WE SERVE

The St Vincent de Paul Society provides basic assistance and serves free meals to people from all walks of life, including senior citizens, single parent families, veterans, those working two jobs to make ends meet, the unemployed and the homeless. The vast majority of those we serve are employed in Marin County.

ADVOCACY

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County focuses on key areas of social justice: poverty, homelessness, unemployment, access to healthcare, alleviation of hunger, and personal security and safety.

Please visit the list of resources we have compiled that describe system change and ways to make the world a better place for those who face poverty. The Society does not prescribe a solution, but merely encourages engagement in the public policy process.
